If you’re one of those out there that just hadn’t made the deep dive into the films of Pete Walker, then now is your chance. That is, of course, if you have an import Blu-ray player. If you don’t, what is the hold up?
88 Films is goign to release a deluxe edtion of Walker’s films in The Flesh & Blood Show set, featuring 7 of Walker’s titles. They include Die Screaming, Marianne (1971), The Flesh and Blood Show (1972), House of Whipcord (1974), Frightmare (1974), House of Mortal Sin (1976) Schizo (1977) and The Comeback (1978). They haven’t released any price or any details of the extras, but they do say these will all be “presented in new HD remasters, and featuring a scary array of exclusive extras, including brand-new interviews with Walker himself.” This set is to be released in September.
Now, depending on the extras and the price, and if these are just HD scans or actually in UHD, if you don’t have an import Blu-ray player, or just don’t want to spend the money, I would suggest you pick up the two Blu-Ray collections that Redemption put out a few years ago. Between those two collections, they have 11 films, though 3 of them I wouldn’t qualify as horror.
Collection 1 has Schizo (1977), House of Whipcord (1974), The Comeback (1978), Die Screaming, Marianne (1971). All have commentary by Walker except for Schizo, which does feature an interview with Walker. This goes for a little over $40 on Amazon. Collection 2 has The Flesh and Blood Show (1972), Frightmare (1974), House of Mortal Sin (1976), Home before Midnight (1979), Man of Violence (1970), and The Big Switch (1968). These have audio commentaries by Walker on Frightmare & House of Mortal Sin. This is currently on Amazon for about $50. I will say that Kino Lorber has these and usually has some really good sales every now and then, so you might be able to pick them up even cheaper.
I’m still waiting to see what the extras will be on this new set from 88 Films, but no matter where you get them or which set, I can’t recommend them enough. In fact, we even covered 3 of Walker’s films in an episode of Discover the Horror (just click HERE). If you’re a fan of gritty British horror films of the ’70s, then you will love these. These are definitely ones that will leave you with a punch in the gut.
