News started to spread quickly yesterday that the Mahoning Drive-In, located in Lehighton, PA, recently found out that the land they are located on has been optioned to Greenskies Clean Energy LLC, a solar company that plans to tear down the drive-in theater, which has been there since 1949, and use the land for a solar farm. Now, I’m all up for clean living, but there has to be other places to put one of these instead of on this thriving drive-in that has been running for close to 75 years, and has been creating lasting memories for generations of movie fans.

Now, I’ve never been to this drive-in, mainly because for us living out in the Midwest, its a bit of a drive. But if I did live closer, I would be at this place every probably ever weekend, because it seems like they have some amazing lineup going on all the time! Usually catering to horror and cult films, they are always pulling in the crowds. This drive-in has been giving horror fans the chance to see some classic cinema on the big screen, and continues to do so. I’ve seen more than a few drive-in theaters go under in my life and it gets harder and harder each time, because the number of drive-ins are dwindling, and these places are so much fun, especially for the whole family. Attending a drive-in is an experience like no other, nothing like going to an indoor theater. It is an event when you go to the drive-in. So why not fight like hell to keep one of these open!

What makes even less sense is that the Mahoning doing great business! So why shut down something that is a success?!?!?

Now is the horror communities turn to step up and help this drive-in remain open to continue what they have been doing for the last seven decades. They need your support now more than ever.

Going by what is posted on the Mahoning’s website, this is what you can do to help save it. Even if you’re not from the area, you can still help by sending a letter or two to the addresses below showing your support to keep this open.

• Share posts (the more the better) about this issue on social media, hashtagging #savethemahoning, #greenskiescleanenergy, and #cfdevelopmentpenn.
• If you’ve ever attended an event at the Mahoning Drive-In, post about it on social media, tagging those above. Flood their social medial outlets with support of keeping the Mahoning open.
• If you’ve ever attended an event there and you’re from out of town, mention that you’ve spent time and money in the local hotels and restaurants all because you were attending the Mahoning Drive-In Theater.
• Especially mention if you’ve travelled to that area specifically to attend this drive-in theater.
• Send letters to the addresses below to show your support for the Mahoning Drive-in, at a time where every single post, letter, and mention will help.

If you can, you are also welcome to come show your support at the Aug. 3rd meeting, which takes place at 7pm (arrive early), wearing your Mahoning shirt, at the appointed location (close to the theater) to either speak or send a message by your physical presence. They especially need local support and neighbors to come out and speak out against a solar farm replacing this piece of so many of our hearts and history.
