Since The Giant Claw is one of my all-time favorites from the ‘50s, the announcement of this being on released on Blu-ray had my attention. Then to find out it would be in a special edition box set celebrating the works of low budget producer Sam Katzman. This guy was a producer that spanned just shy of 40 years that produced 239 pictures. In the decade of the ‘50s, he produced 105 titles, averaging out to almost 1 a month! He made everything from horror and sci-fi films to westerns, musicals, rock and roll, and just about every other exploitation genre out there.
Now Arrow Video has put together 4 of his better-known titles to release in a special box set, featuring a ton of extras. The films are Creature with the Atom Brain (1955), The Werewolf (1956), Zombies of Mora Tau (1957), and the one and only The Giant Claw (1957)! Each film has a ton of features, like audio commentary by a variety of film critics, an 60-page book featuring extensive new writing by Laura Drazin Boyes, Neil Mitchell, Barry Forshaw, Jon Towlson, and Jackson Cooper. Then there is an 80-page book featuring reproduction stills and artwork from each of the films, plus new writings from historian and critic Stephen R. Bissette. Each film also has a new visual essay on the works of Katzman, as well as trailers and image gallery.
Price at $65 is a good price when you’re considering you’re getting 4 great films that are probably going to look the best they have. I’m still on the fence because I have the Katzman DVD box set that had all of these same movies and not sure if I NEED to upgrade them. But most likely, I will take the plunge, because just the idea of having The Giant Claw on Blu-ray makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside!
