For the July 4th weekend, we know a lot of people are busting out Jaws to watch, since it is a favorite this time of year. As it should be. But there are so many other great monsters out there waiting under the water’s surface, so what better time to celebrate those!
From barracudas, killer whales, piranhas, octopus, crocs, gators, and all sorts of other nasty beasties out there, we want to hear your favorite… except for sharks! Let’s take sharks off the menu, so to speak, since most will be posting about Jaws anyway. But there are so many other great titles out there, let’s put the spotlight on them for now.
So what cinematic underwater adventure featuring one of the many (non-shark) terrors of the deep is your favorite?
Humanoids from the Deep easily takes the top spot for me after Jaws if we’re speaking about any kind of underwater terror!
But if we’re talking more strictly about creatures from the natural world then it’s all about Orca or Alligator for me! Then again Alligator doesn’t take place in it’s natural environment so I guess then that would move Orca to the top spot! Lol! Just received the newly released blu from SF a couple of days ago and was planning to watch it sometime this weekend.
Of course there are plenty of cool and fun killer croc flicks out there as well. The Italians and Australians made some that rank high on my list of favorites but, for better or worse, I try to see em all! Lol!

For a humanoid monster, I would agree is high, but you really can’t get above the original Creature from the Black Lagoon..
I was never a big fan of Orca for some reason. But Alligator, as cheesy as some of that movie is, I still think it is pretty scary and holds up.

I definitely won’t argue that Creature is without question the best of that type of film and I do love it dearly. But my personal favorite would still be Humanoids simply because it’s the one that goes all the way! Lol!
Like Jaws and Alligator, I saw Orca at a pretty young age when it was on tv and some of those scenes, especially the attack on Bo Derek. had a big impact on me. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve watched it so I’m looking forward to revisiting it again.
I agree that Alligator does still holds up really well! The grim atmosphere of those sewer sequences still give me the chills.

Jaws would stand above all the rest for sure. Humanoids from the Deep and Creature from the Black Lagoon would be next on the list. I did rewatch Alligator recently and that is a very entertaining film, more so than I remembered.

Just don’t watch Alligator II….oof! Although…it does have an incredible cast, with Richard Lynch as a gator hunter!

There are so many here to choose from.
For the overall best I have to go w/ Creature from the black lagoon. His costume is so great and the movie so enjoyable. I fell in love with it as a kid and still love it today.
For goofy fun I would probably go with Zaat/ Blood Waters of Dr. Z. What a weird concept. Wanting to become a killer fish and mutate fish to attack the world!
Finally, for the second best (after the Gillman) costume design I go with The She Creature. That is a quality rubber suit!

Loved that you brought up ZAAT! I freaking love that movie…cheesy as hell, but a damn fun one. And kudos for the Blaisdell design for She-Creature, such a unique look to it.

I was more disappointed in that one, since they really hyped it up as another Jaws movie, but it wasn’t. But yes…that eel…oof.

This might be a little off-topic, but when I reflect on Terrors in the Deep, I think of the giant squid attack on the Nautilus from the film, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). One of my all-time favorite fantasy films featuring a great cast and some ground-breaking special effects for its time.

I have to agree with you, Todd. That squid was always the coolest part of the movie! Granted, I always wanted to have my own sub like that.
