Music composed by Richard Band
At my very first horror convention, back in 1988 which took place in California, I had picked up the soundtrack for this on LP and I immediately fell in love with it. Composer Richard Band created a score that has a perfect combination of a science feel but still being able to create some very creepy elements to it. I was very bummed when I got rid of my albums and had to wait more than a few years for this to get an official release on CD, which I picked up right when it came out.
With its eerie strings and different sounds, it gives off such an unusual feeling of the bizarre. One of my favorite tracks, which is the second track on this release, The Resonator and Main Title, is the first bit of music you hear when Jeffrey Combs’ character turns on the machine. It immediately sets the tone. It is one of those scores that not only works perfectly within the film, but it also very effective when you’re just listening to the score by itself, almost like it is one of the movie’s characters. You can almost feel something coming… something From Beyond!
The best thing about this release from La-La Land Records was that there is almost 10 more minutes of music that had not been previously released on that LP I had, so this makes it the definitive edition for fans. For fans of Lovecraft, Stuart Gordon, and definitely Richard Band, this is a must for soundtrack fans.
