I just love it when I stumbled across a soundtrack from a film that I’ve never heard before but just love it. I picked up a copy of Ilfman’s score for Sensoria because it was on sale at one of the online soundtrack places I frequent often. I’ve enjoyed Ilfman’s scores for Big Bad Wolves and Ghost Stories and this was cheap enough so I figured I’d take the chance.

I had no idea what the movie is about but immediately fell in love with this because right from the very first track, it sets the tone for this quiet and almost dreamlike score. From the slow keyboard or xylophone (can’t tell which) and a haunting vocal in the background, it really grabs your attention. Then with the next track, Mr. Steiner,  the creepy level starts to rise a bit. The overall mood of the score is very somber and slow, almost like a lullaby, but with something a little darker going on. When you get to the third track, Caroline’s Theme, it starts off like a music box but then halfway through its like a storm coming in before going back to the simple keys on the piano. Very effective.

Maybe I’m just easy when it comes to scores that use strings and piano, you’ve pretty much got my attention. You throw in some haunting vocals, and I’m done! Besides those elements, the rest of the score fills the background with a moody atmosphere.

Ilfman has created a beautiful score here and I can’t wait to get a hold of the movie to see how it plays with the visual story.
