Never in a million years would I have thought this would ever happen. It is one of those legends that you hear about, sometimes even doubting if it was really true, but yes, it actually did exist. And now, fans will have the chance to experience this themselves!
When Sam Sherman was looking for a Frankenstein picture to fill the need for a booking, he acquired the rights to Paul Naschy’s Mark of the Wolfman, which oddly enough didn’t have a Frankenstein (doctor or creature) anywhere in the picture. But that didn’t stop Sherman, exploitation genius that he was, who added a little animated intro and changed the name of the film to Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror, and unleashed it upon the world.
Now, when this picture was shot, it was originally shot in 3-D and when Sherman found that out, he had a few prints struck and had it playing in a few theaters. But there were too many difficulties in getting it played so it was pulled from the very limited release.
But now, original 3-D elements were recently discovered in the Independent International archives and a new 35mm print has been struck by Garagehouse Pictures, which will soon be touring the US. They will be using state-of-the-art 3-D viewers and technology to give audiences and Naschy fans finally the chance to see this picture the way it was original intended to be seen! Thanks to Exhumed Films, it will be making its premiere at the Lightbox Film Center in Philadelphia, PA.
They will also be screening Al Adamson’s Dracula vs Frankenstein. Sam Sherman, the man responsible for bringing Naschy to the States, will be on hand to introduce the film.
