Strange how a soundtrack could make you go back and revisit a film that you had turned off the first time you attempted to watch it because it was terrible. That is what happened with me and Ti West’s Trigger Man. I got through the first ten minutes and couldn’t go any further. Sometime later, I had picked up Grace’s score for Stakeland and was really impressed with it. So I started to look up some of this other scores and came across this CD that had both Trigger Man and The Roost on it for a pretty cheap price, so I figured what the hell.
I couldn’t believe how creepy and well done the score for Trigger Man was. So simple but so damn effective. The way it sounds like he is just using a couple of instruments, scraping and twisting screeching sounds from them, creating a very effective piece of background music. Some of the tracks builds up some tension, like track 6 Taking Aim, but most of the score is slow, quiet, and highly effective. Granted, going back and trying to rewatch the film….uh…still didn’t care for it.
Then The Roost score begins, with an intro from a horror host show, that is cheesy, fun, and very reminiscent of those kind of shows. The rest of the score is also very effective, with a little more depth than Trigger Man, but still using the same kind of style. Lot of string instruments that is used to build up tension, at a faster pace. Since I’m a big fan of string instruments, it is right up my alley. And Grace does a great job creating some really cool and atmospheric music and soundscapes with them.
Grace is an amazing composer that can create some of the most effective film scores with just a couple of instruments. He always is able to develop different moods and feelings within the notes that blend so well into the film, or when just played on their own, are still highly effective.
