This score starts out sounding just like you’d expect, like a score from some Shakespearian period piece, with a classic flair with waltzes, and other pieces of music that are very similar to that era. But then things change a bit and there are some tracks that sound like a track from Apocalyptica or the Two Cellos, but are still great pieces of music. But by track 6, We Are Under Attack, the music seems to move out from the traditional classical them and into more on a modern day sound, with plenty of loud moments and faster bits of music. But the cool thing is that as a whole, the score never sounds like it forgets the time period that it is supposed to be representing, and that is one of the things I liked most about it.

The last track, Happy Ending, I found just to be a beautiful piece of music, irregardless if it was from an actual movie score or not. It just felt like it had so much emotion put into the notes that I really enjoyed it.

I first became aware of Velázquez’s work with The Orphanage. He would later score Shiver, Julia’s Eyes, Mama, more recently Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak. His work is well worth checking out.
